About that whole pink mace post a few days ago that I reblogged…

It’s not even so much that I’m bothered that pink mace exists. I’m bothered that, having lived in both NYC and LA, I’ve never heard someone tell a man he should carry mace to protect himself, but I’ve been asked multiple times if I own any, or been given the advice that (especially given some of the neighborhoods I’ve lived in) I “really should buy some, even though it’s illegal.” That’s rape culture in action and that sucks.

Pink mace will never be marketed to men, and the majority of men will never be told they ought to buy some for personal protection. Not that men don’t buy mace, and not that they aren’t told they shouldn’t own some in specific situations, but it’s gotta be rare that men living in big cities are told they should buy mace to protect themselves on their daily commute.
